The kid kind of looks like an elf in this.
This was inspired by a really lovely illustration I saw on face book of an astronaut with the earth hovering between the his (or her) hands.
I was playing with the app ArtRage yesterday and went back to try their watercolor brush. The latest app update has this tool working better.
Work has been pretty intense for the last month but I think I can really get back to painting again. I would like to start a new series of paintings… thus far I am grabbing my iPad and painting whatever, however. So now the search for a new series to do, which leads to this post. Maybe doing portraits that are stripped down to minimal elements and limited color.
Waiting for Sam to finish his lesson and just wrapped up a call. Quick sketch of a dumpster.
Sketched on my phone using sketchbook pro.
A sketch of my son Sam. Done on my iPhone with the SketchTime app and Sensu Brush.
This is really only the beginning of a drawing but I was trying to capture some of the light coming in on Gloria while she slept this morning. She is so beautiful...
A yummy beer from one of our fab local craft brewers, Hops and Grains.
I was hanging out waiting for Sam to finish his violin lesson and started drawing some cars in the parking lot. I used to do this a lot.
This feels into that not sure what I am making but just enjoying making. You know, right?
A quick sketch of a glass with pens and pencils in it. Sketchtime app.
Our cat Izzy. Sitting in the doorway.
I have been having a hard time getting around to drawing and painting this week. So I dabbed this out while eating lunch. Liked the colors of the balls in the light… used my Sensu Brush with ArtRage for iPhone.
Went to the gym this afternoon. Here is what was on my bed before leaving.
I went back in to the original design and added another layer than played with after importing into the app Repix.
Having fun making shapes.
I have been enjoying trying out the app IsoSketch. It is a isometric sketching app.
Laying in bed, sketching.
I found this from my trip to Canandaigua, NY. I painted it while sitting in the back of a boat while rain approached. The sky was changing from blue to gray. See the buoy in the lower right?
My two essential fluids, water and beer.
We been have been having a lot of great tomatoes at our house. They always look so beautiful on our kitchen counter.
The kid needed some game-time before heading back to his CIT duties at Camp Halfblood. So he had some quality time with Civ V. Both boys have told me I need to get my empire building cap back on and try this version.
My friend Byron and I walked over to the Long Center and did some urban sketching. Our skyline in Austin keeps changing… a friendly pigeon kept us company and became a good subject.
I bet you noticed. This is photo that have manipulated with my new fav photo editor app, Repix. This is app is awesome! Mason sent some photos from his trip over in France and so I was playing with them. Can’t wait to see the bugger back here at home.
The big guy barely fits on the little windowsill but that is just how he likes it. And two stories up he gets to look down on the neighbors dogs.
Doodling in the Sketches app.
I was playing with a new app, repix, that a customer had recommended. It is a blast to use. I grabbed this recent photo of Sam on his first day of work at the gym, he was throwing up the, “Dad go away” hand.
Here is another painting of tomatoes from our kitchen window sill. Something about veggies in the kitchen. It is comforting.
Sitting in the living room. Not feeling so much like drawing but wanted to non the less, if that makes any sense. The is the stool that the whole family uses when practicing (not all at the same time of course).
I can hear ya baby! Cause I have some big ass ears!
My gal likes to sleep :)
I have been trying to get a portrait of my buddy Rick that I am satisfied with, this one is getting somewhere...
A couple of heirloom tomatoes hanging out on thew windowsill waiting for dinner. Drawn while hanging out with my lovely wife in the kitchen. Makes me happy.
Reading a great book called ‘Insectopedia’, hence the praying manis…. it is on the cover.
This is some sort of critter dog that is slobbering. I think it is sad. Maybe a little kitty snack got away. Poor doggie.
Just a face. Matches the banner color of my blog page nicely.
I was testing some brushes today and painted a coffee cup while doing so. Coffee. Good.
Missing my buddy Rick. This is a sketch from his wedding… great memories.
Trying out the new app Pen & Ink by sketching in Stacey Park, Austin.
No idea. A crown maybe?
This is a wonderful pale lager by our local craft brewer, Hops and Grains.
It is nice to be home again… Mason was practicing on his cello so I took the opportunity to draw.
I don’t spend enough time using Sketchbook Pro. It is a really powerful app that crosses all the platforms and even is available on all the desktop machines. This is basically sitting down with a beer and making marks to see where they lead.
A nice beer for a hot day in Texas. Drawn with Sketch Club.
I wanted to try another version of this sketch using some retro colors. Used the Procreate app.
Waiting for Sam to finish his lesson so thought I would draw what was in front of me. Using Paper by 53 and my Sensu.
I site I see often. Lewis sleeping on Gloria. Yes. His pillow... my wife.
This was drawn from life, after dinner, watching Gloria tipping and tapping on her laptop. I was just trying to capture some volumes of color and not really worrying about anything else. I used Sketch Club and my Sensu Brush.
Long day and falling asleep. So I am just going to explore making marks in the app Sketch Club.
Don’t know if this really counts as a self portrait or not. But here it is.
I was trying out other brushes in the wonderful app Procreate. Such a powerful app.
We have some dear friends who are about to send their oldest child off to college and they asked if I would do a little sketch for a party.
Sam doing a little studying in our bed.
Another drawing of the Arrow. Actually did this on the 13th but am posting it today. My blog. My rules. This was drawn in Sketch Club and the marks feel sort of like pointillism.
I love our courtyard.
The kid is happy that he has a phone that can send text messages. Welcome to this modern day and age kid.
I was sitting in the doctors office and thought, “what if I had some google glasses to use, where would all the other stuff go that is on my head?”. Sunglasses, reading glasses (can the google glass help with that?). I feel pretty goofy as it is contacts, reading glasses and sunglasses! Getting old stinks kids!
I got to hang out these past two weekends with the fabulous painter Valerie Fowler. She was a willing subject for a portrait yesterday as the West Studio Tour came to a close.
Two chairs on our neighbor Valeries deck. Procreate and Sensu brush.
Doodling on the plane home from Chicago. Doodle, doodle, doodle.
Kind of slow at the moment so I sketched some flowers in Valerie’s studio while we waited for the crush of people to arrive.
Not feeling at all well today. Flat on my back staring at the windows. I know what to draw….
Playing with the app Zenbrush. Just started noodling around until a face appeared.
I was trying out the app Brushes, which was one of the first drawing apps on the iPad and started playing with it again.
This is a combo painting using Aura Marker and Procreate of one of my favorite beers at the moment.
We got some artichokes in our box of veggies this week. Pretty. Here is one sitting on the blanket next to me. Procreate and Sensu Brush. Actually this was done on the 13th but I am sneaking it in here.
I think I missed a couple of days of sketches… busy weekend and the heat is starting to arrive here in Texas. It is going to 90 today. Ouch. SketchTime and Sensu brush.
This painted from a photo that I took earlier in the evening while hanging out with friends Evan and Gail. Used ArtRage (watercolor) and Sensu brush.
Mason and I went to a college fair at the convention center. Wow. Lots of schools and lots of people. This college stuff is big business.
Getting sort of lazy. Not really just had some meetings get in the way of sketching. This is a doodle using an app called, Eastern Painting. Sort of a Sumi style paint program. Did this on my iPhone and the resolution is lousy...
I keep going back this photo reference of Mason and trying to make something good out it. Missed again. Oh well.
Doodling in SketchTime.
A simple head. Drawn in SketchTime on my iPhone. I made a slight revision to the version on the right. But it sure feels different.
Lewis was mad at me because our other cat Izze was on my lap and I refused to let him knock her off of there. So he sat and ‘loafed’ about four feet away. Now I know how to get him to pose for me :)
Drawing of the yummy Ridgeback Ale by No Label Brewery.
I was re-visiting a card that I made for Gloria last year. Trying to simplify the image a bit and add a better facial expression to the kitten.
Simple, fast, I in landscape… going to sleep.
Another in the series of ‘letters in the Landscape’.
Izze asleep on Gloria’s leg while she kicks back with her laptop. Drawn in Sketcthtime with my Sensu Brush.
It really is a sort of therapy to just sit and look around. Maybe do a sketch or two. Or twenty.
Another sketch in Zen Brush using my Sensu Brush.
Very nice to sit in the courtyard and sketch after a crazy day. This is done in Zen Brush with my Sensu Brush.
A drawing as I fall asleep.
This doesn’t really look like Mason, but it was fun getting him in a cowboy hat.
I am getting the opportunity to try out a Nexus 7 for an extended period of time and am pretty excited about it. It feels really nice. This sketch is done with the app Zen Brush (mac and android).
I got the chance to play with a Nexus 7 yesterday (and look forward to using it in-depth for a while) and opened up Sketchbook to draw in. Really nice experience.
A sketch of Izze assisting Gloria with her daily crossword puzzle.
I was finishing my coffee this morning an had an idea that I thought I could do in the app Procreate. Turns out I was wrong but this is what the result was.
This is one of those random drawings that starts with just making lines and see if anything takes shape. Rabbit Head Guy? I don’t really know. Did this one in ArtRage and with my Sensu Brush. ArtRage has a lot of great tools in it. I was using the palette knife quite a bit here. Love that tool!
Everything is budding out here in Austin and soon the bugs will be back. Todays sketch was a little buggy dude… I was using the SketchTime app and my Sensu Brush.
Izze was loafing on the mantel looking out into the front yard. I painted this one in Procreate with the Sensu Brush.
A quick sketch of Mason after finishing his first regatta (which he loved). He is now about 3 inches taller than me, yikes!
This is a really delicious beer. Had it for the first time while sketching with my friend Byron at the Whip-In.
You’ve heard the reports right? Sugar is toxic.
Quick sketch of Gloria while we sit and talk about our day with each other. Ok, it’s sort of a scary portrait but she is pretty tired.
We were contacted a by developer in China who has released a neat new app focused at kids called Aura Marker. It has some really nice qualities about it. And yes, that is a beach ball.
Another brew. A nice stout from the Brooklyn Brewery.
I was enjoying a quiet night at home with a fire and a beer and decided to try and draw our courtyard path at night. There was some moonlight and a couple of landscape lights to light the scene. Frankly this won’t be recognizable to anyone but me but I did find it challenging and enjoyable.
It’s another in the Alphabet/Landscape series.
Sitting in the courtyard doodling, sipping a beer, feeling the cold air blowing in...
Izze was sitting on the table (which is a no-no) in a the ‘loafing’ position.
Another one of Izze loafing. This one was actually much better and I accidentally cropped it and saved it before I could undo it.

Oh to be able to play like this. And that is one beautiful tenor guitar.
Just sitting in the courtyard having a beer and making marks. Using Sketchbook Ink.
I have a postcard of a beautiful poster from Poland for the movie, Shane. I basically was copying it to try and figure out the parts of the lovely composition. I used the Procreate app for this one. Something to shoot for (pun intended). Sadly, the name of the poster artist is not on the postcard, I would like to see more of their work.
I am guessing that E is next.
I guess I am going to need to do the whole alphabet :)
This really should be called, “Self Portrait: Recovering from the Flu.”
It’s a little Valentine’s Kitty getting it’s smile on for next week. This was inspired by the beautiful quilt that my sister-in-law made for me. Which is awesome!
Another letter in the landscape.
Another letter in the landscape. I like these.
Another from the Creative World floor while showing the Sensu Brush to thousands of visitors to the show in Frankfurt, Germany.
Another from the Creative World floor while showing the Sensu Brush to thousands of visitors to the show in Frankfurt, Germany. I like this one.
Another from the Creative World floor while showing the Sensu Brush to thousands of visitors to the show in Frankfurt, Germany.
I met up with my friends Aaron and Griselda at the Whip In yesterday for a brew. Had a delicious Thirsty Planet Silverback. I did this painting on my iPhone using ArtRage for iPhone. Works great with my Sensu brush.
Scribbles before bed.
Doing a quick sketch with SketchTime and my Sensu Brush on my iPad before settling to read. A cup of lemon chamomile tea will taste great on this chilly night in Austin.
A different version of Izze with some glasses on. She looks sort of studious doesn’t she.
The wonderful app, ArtRage, has released a version for the iPhone. This is a first quick sketch with it. Looking forward to trying it for an extended period.
Trying another version of this one. Gloria looks cute and happier, Izze looks kind of odd. But, she is wearing glasses after all.
I was playing around tonight in Sketchbook Ink, using a photo of Izze (cat) and Gloria (wife) as reference. So there were some fun things I liked about it and on another version that is more simplified.
This is just doodles in the app Sketchbook Ink. Really nothing to much to look at here.
I started this while waiting for my sons recital to start. Didn’t get a chance to finish. And Sam sounded great.
Quick sketch of the counter while waiting for a morning meeting to get underway.
I was working on dinner and saw this little bird just outside the window and sketched in SketchTime on my iPhone.
