Who is This?

flexible
I haven’t posted in days! The Sensu brush has been keeping me really busy. We did go see the Austin Symphony the other night and really enjoyed it. The program was called, Beyond the Right of Spring. Before the concert started I was sketching with my fountain pen in the almost dark and when I went back and looked at it it reminded me of Ben Franklin doing a jig.

Comments

Brian with Extra Arms

flexible
I was having fun with a feature in the app Procreate that allows you to import a photo and then smudge those pixels around. It resulted in turning our neighbor and friend Brian Beattie into a a multi-armed Demon.
Comments

Ed part 3

flexible
In doing some research on an up coming blog post over at sensubrush I realized that you can import an image into Procreate and have it be converted into live pixels (not sure if that is the correct term for this). Basically, you can start working the colors not as reference but as paint. So I thought I would try one attempt with Ed since the portrait was fresh in my mind. I brought the photo into Procreate and ‘smudged’ it around creating a loose pastel like image. I then imported that into ArtRage where yesterdays painting was and layered it in. Adjusted opacity and worked over the top of both images a bit. And while the end result it is less painting and more photograph, I like how it turned out and the process has a lot of potential.
Comments

More Ed

flexible
My friends (rightly so) commented that they just weren’t feeling ‘Ed’ in the yesterdays portrait. So they sent me another photo to work from and it sounds like his spirit is showing through in this one. I have to admit making a portrait that is meant to be part of a memorial adds a bit of pressure.

Rocketo

flexible
A few years back I gave a graphic novel to Mason called, Rocketo, by Frank Espinosa. The drawings are wonderful… above is a lame sketch (by comparison) of the main character. You may have noticed I updated my website as well. Let me know what you think. I see a few things to adjust still, but the motivation was to make it ‘responsive’ so that it detects and adjusts to the myriad mobile devices out there in the world.

Cactus

flexible
A couple drawings from some sketchy (in a good way) apps. The cactus was done in SketchTime and the portrait below was done in Paper. Both are very nice apps with nice thought (and restraint) in regards to the user experience. And variable line width, which is fantastic in my opinion.

Blue Beard & Parking

flexible
The title of the post is more exciting than the actual post :) I did go to an interesting presentation today by Dr. Donald Shoup (the prophet of parking). He was brought to town by Council member Chris Riley who has been very active in trying to resolve Austin’s parking woes. Shoup has written a book, The Real Cost of Free Parking, in it he suggests that all this parking that is required of developers and merchants should be removed and instead use metered parking (priced as to what the market will bear-and in such a way that you always have a few empty spots) is a better model for solving the issues in problem areas. Revenue collected by the meters is then given back to the areas that support (less maintenance costs). Those dollars can then be used for improvements (sidewalks, trees, law enforcement etc.). People who don’t want to pay will find alternative methods of getting to and fro (bike, bus, walk)… I am oversimplifying this, but is interesting.

Did a sketch of Dan (banjo), Harvey (mando) and Jimmy (guito).

Abstract #7 2012-02-18 (01.29PM)
Just continuing to play with the ability to lock down an alpha channel in Procreate and paint inside it. Quite fun. Limiting myself to three colors and seeing what happens. Simpler seems better to me, so the top one is kind nice. But, overall I like the energy I can get with a certain brush (it does not have a name so I don’t know how to refer to it).
